The power of a wooden wedge! Cleaving oak at Honfleur a few years ago. Cleaving timber can be really quick and produce strong timber for many types of construction as it follows the grain of the wood.
🗡️ smith, bladesmith Soeren talks to me about his experience undergoing an apprenticeship in Germany. Full interview on YT.
I visited Soeren as he made a copy of a 10th century Viking age axe in his workshop in Viencocu Parks, Latvia

Dimitri studied cabinetmaking in Montreal. I met him at his off grid workshop in France, where we chatted about how he got here, and traditional crafts in France. First of a new series of interviews on my YouTube channel where I go into more depth with makers about how they got into craft.

Hewing tips compilation. Using the axe to convert timber is fun, but like any skill needs patience and practice. Traditional carpentry and woodworking craft.
This year at FRAME, the annual gathering of @carpentersfellowship there’ll be a hewing competition!
Amazing finishing axe by @lamaisonluquet
A makers journey #1: Dimitri Colombain. The first in a series on my YouTube (same name and link in comments) where I sit down and chat with makers that I meet.
In his off grid workshop, I chat to Dimitri about cabinet making, hewing, crafts in France and Canada- even organ building.

No waste traditional carpentry. Even the peg ends have a use! One way to hide the holes left from fixing joinery to something. Since it’s not a piano that I’m making, I’m not too worried about matching grain and making plugs that you’d see in other woodworking applications. And if you ever need to adjust, they’re relatively easy to undo.
This is on the renovation of my French house- it’s not a Chateau but I like it!

This chisel, with a metal ferrule on the end is made for heavy duty work. If you try to pound your normal wooden headed chisel with a metal tool like a hammer, lump hammer or back of an axe, very soon the handle will start to mushroom and split. To avoid having to change handles so often, a ferrule can be added on the ends of the handle to stop them from splitting. It doesn’t make them invincible, but they can last a lot longer in the hands of the carpenter.
A well made chisel can last a woodworkers lifetime, and can even be handed along to the next generation of craftspeople.

Timber framer doing small joinery- this’ll be interesting! Still, no glue in sight!
House restoration renovation in France. It’s definitely not a Chateau 😂
